This whale sculpture is 3.5 meters tall and made of 316L stainless steel. It is installed in South Korea. There are two surface treatment of mirror polishing and patina, creating a sharp contrast and highlighting the texture and lines of the whale. The stainless steel panels were cut into beautiful shapes with laser cutting according to the artist’s design, making the whale look more graceful and agile. The large whale is surrounded by two small whales and two diving humans, vividly depicting a beautiful underwater world.
To create such a whale sculpture, we used hand forging process to ensure the sculpture’s lines were flat and smooth. First, a 1:1 hard foam model was made according to the design. Then, the cut panels were carefully forged into the appropriate shape, and each panel was carefully assembled and welded together. Since the sculpture is hollow, the inside panels are also visible, so the welding and polishing work needed to be very fine to ensure the sculpture’s perfection.
